If we all made a list of our favourite three user lanterns, I doubt BriteLyt would be at the top of any of them. So, for what it's worth, here's mine: - 1. Anything Bialaddin/Vapalux - they're much of a muchness, anyway; 2. Tilley X246 Porkpie; 3. Coleman 201; 4. Coleman Quick-Lite thingie from the 1920s. Yes, I know...
Mine would be: Primus 1020: ultra-dependable lowest maintenance workhorse Any Bialaddin/Vapalux: quiet enough to forget its there. 200-250cp Optimus/Petromax: A lot of light in a small package
It varies over time, but what I think today is: Primus 1020 here aswell, and for the same reason as Phil. Then Coleman L327 (LQ327, QL327). Third would be Primus 1001. I just love that special burner type Primus made for a double-tied mantle. Mica shades on all of them. It's best for a lantern you actually use and carry around.
Well it all depends on what the light is needed for. If you need a lot of light, then you can't beat a Petromax style 500cp lantern. (Here I suppose the BriteLyt would come in.) Otherwise a Coleman 236/Primus 1060 is pretty good. As a general user lantern, my pick would be: Austramax - great light output for it's size and easy to use. Primus 1020 - see above Primus 981 - Not as bright as the 1020, but a lot more quiet Then there is the question of indoor lighting. That's a different kettle of fish all together.
Well, I wouldn't normally be using a lantern indoors - unless it was a barn or something, I suppose. I'm not sure about Austramax but my Handi almost got in the list - I was just a bit concerned about the difficulty of replacing the globe so, for me, not a user lantern...
My choices for indoor use especially in winter are : Tilley TL10/106: Light them and need no fiddling for the rest of the evening Coleman 159X: Noisier but brighter and can hang from a bracket too Gloria Oxo-Gas: Quiet, nice mood lighting
I totally agree. If it was easier (cheaper) to get a replacement glass it would certainly be high on the list. The Austramax is a better size though. My list for indoor lighting is a bit variable, but at the moment it is: Primus 994 - the normal Primus simplicity and a good usable light output. Primus 1325 - I like the parchment shade and there is no smell from the alcohol. Optimus 253 - good light in a hanging frame.
My favourite indoor lighting: Tilley TL 146; Tilley TL 10; Tilley 106; Kayen HL7 and the Gloria Oxo Gas. Outdoor/shed: My (almost) everyday lanterns are two Coleman 214s that used to be in Antarctica. When I need a lot of outdoor lighting, I'll use Tilley X246s, the Optimus 300 and a Coleman 236. Camping: Tilley X246 or Austramax. I do like to rotate my 'user' lamps through the system to make sure they are running well. Cheers Tony
Indoor lamps would be table lamps for me, and preferably with opal- or champagne coloured shades/globes. Coleman CQ with an opal shade would be my first choice, even if I often also use the one with the steel shade #334. It's fairly silent, petrol smell better than paraffin and is also much cheaper, which not is a fact to neglect on an actual user. Plus the fact that these old Coleman lamps just simply always work, is fool-proof and simple. Primus 1015 would be my 2:nd choice. Round globe or Vesta-type shade varies depending on purpose for the night. I find this burner type to be more silent than the 1020-type (which otherwise is more straightforward and reliable) and thus better for indoor use. Primus 394 might be the third choice. Sometimes you just want to run an alcohol fueled lamp, and the smaller 394 is a nice lamp which don't give you ridiculous much light, which seldom is a preference for normal indoor light. To be honest, I actually use my Aladdin mantle lamps much more than pressure lamps indoor... Those, and an old Tito-Landi that works flawlessly! That one has cost me a lot of petrol over the years. I prefer more silent and dimmable lamps inside the house.

Three users? Don't get to use any much now but when a power cut occurs number one is a Pitner Parlour lamp and then whatever has fuel. A few weeks ago they were a Coleman 242 and a Bialaddin 315. ::Neil::
Favourite three, I'm not sure I've got that many. 1. Coleman 214 2. My other Coleman 214 3. Tilley Al16, It's a nice weight to carry and it's a good height when you put it down and pick it up. Indoor: 1. Something Coleman and paraffin 2. Tilley Tl10 3. Tilley jacobean/aladdin twist.
Until recently my choice would be: 1. Tilley 246 Guardsman 2. Tilley 246 BR 3. Tilley 246B....... any one of seven lamps....... 'cause that's what I had Now I have more to choose from: 1. one of the above, 2. My unbranded Petromax/Anchor clone if I want lots of light 3. Coleman 201 This may change as more lamps come into my possession.
Bialaddin T10 - Always a pleasure to use. Tilley X246 Guardsman - Ever reliable and plucky Coleman 237B - Simple and blinds the neighbors Could substitute my NiteHawk 701 but its more fiddly.
Outdoor Coleman 236 : easy and quick to light, lot of output Radius 119 : quiet , working good Primus 991 : hard to light, but just love those small lamps Indoor: Primus 992 Primus 1025 Optimus 930 (always filled up and ready for a powercut) , you need something to easy carry around.
