-20F temps and deep snow have made wood gathering essential and difficult. I'm spending as much time plowing snow in the woods as I do cutting. I also have to winch the trees to the trail since I can't drive up to the trees like I'm used to. It got frustrating when the tree would drag my utility vehicle on the snow, so I have to chain it to a tree like an energetic puppy! Hello Al, that is quite a task, but a good fire is worth some effort, Jeff.

Gosh Al, all that effort, we're certainly spoiled this winter in N.E. Scotland, no snow to speak of. Never mind, spring will soon be here - and there in Pennsylvania too with any luck!

If I'm lucky, I can get three days of firewood for one day of combined plowing and cutting. The good trees are getting further from the trail, so the winching takes a fair amount of time. I cut my wood to 22" (55.8cm) for the boiler, so at least the larger pieces make for full loads.

I'm looking forward to summer, but spring brings mud, and then I won't be able to get into the woods for a while. Very odd place we live in!
