So, few days ago I was happy to had working my first pressure lamp - Petromax 829BW. Now I know that I'm in love with classic lamps... or with fettling them? For my next love I bought Petromax 2827 in very very bad condition. Very dirty and rusty: Unfortunatly it is incomplete - there is no top part under the hood Also I wasn't able to strip lower vaporiser part, but this one is fortunately available at pelam.de. There was some strange part in place of rapid also. There were many pits everywhere in tank and all chassis. I decided to start from the tank - removed old paint with sand paper: Next I washed it with rust remover and paint with an anti-rust primer: It looked really bad so next was filling holes, grinding, polishing... .. and this is what I have right now: I ordered RAL6014 paint from MotipDupli and I want to finish it with this color. I mentioned, that it had some strange part in place of standard rapid: So, can my older colleagues will serve me some advice? I'll try to keep this thread up with my progress with this lantern, but it will take some time, becouse today I become a father
Hi Podly Congratulation with you beeing a father - what a nice suprice to read. I follow your work with attention. I have also this piece of work in front of me with a 2827. So far it looks like nice job. Once again GZ with your newborn. ;O) Claus C
Good work. Nice lamp. I order my lamp parts at www.hytta.de The strange thing is assumingly a stop somebody did put in while the original rapid had died. it would have had an alloy metal rapid lever which sadly are not available any more. Before painting make sure the inside of the tank is clean too.
Thanks, a little progress - tank painted and I am really happy with effect. Color is very simmilar to oryginal.
Hi Podly You are doing a very nice job there. What a change! Do you mix the paint-colour yourself og is possible to find spray-bottles with the right colour? How did you paint? Claus C.
Hi Claus, I did use ready paint RAL 6014 from motipdupli: http://www.motip.com/products/motip/decoration/home-hobby/camouflage-lacquer/ it is scratch free and shock proof and is resistant to petrol and chemicals, so it should be ok for tank. Id put three primer coats and four color coats and after all I used a little polishing paste on everything. Now I work with manometer - inside it looks OK, but outside it was in worst condition then tank, so similar steps need to be done. In meantime I clean smaller parts - you can see already polished cap on tank. cheers, Michal
Here is my pressure gauge progress I still didn't decide what paint to use - spray or give it for professional powder coating together whith lower part of mainframe. Is it possible to safely dismantle mainframe and later assebmly it back? cheers, Michal
Hi Podly you are obviously a master fetteler the lantern looks great will be watching with interest Kenny,,
Thanks Kenny, this is my second lantern I still wonder how to fix hood. I read what Steve wrote in this post: http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/4727 but I don't think, that 2827 hood will be an option in this project. Ive been searching for a while for a heat resistant filler and found this: http://vitcas.com/heat-resistant-filler Temperature looks OK.. what do you think? By the way.. sometimes I found that when I wrote manometer it doesn't mean this same as pressure gauge in english.. so, does it or not? Just want to know, and I am really sorry for my bad english cheers, Michal
Hi Podly Darn nice work. You are lucky to have such a fine manometer, mine was broken at the rod but I have all the parts despite. Darn fine fotos too. Its almost like being there. I think your english is fine - maybe you have a little southern accent - but I wouldnt notice it if you mentioned it 8) Regards Claus C.
Hi Michal Where do you find this stuff? Decals. I thougt they were impossible to find to this lamp. Do you have at WWW-adress for these, decals? They look very exact, are they? Claus C
I recived them from one collector from Germany who makes decals (non-commercial!) for pressure lamps. I can give you an email if you need - let me know in PM. Michal
Hi Michal Thanks a lot - I have tried to send 2 PM and I have recieved 2 PM from you. I obviously have a problem there, it seems to my PM dont arrive
Thanks Michal I got your information and have send a PM to you too with my mailadress. If it doesnt show - I might have problems with my mail-system here on CPL. Claus C
Things going very slow, but I made next little step - sandblasted mainframe. It looks better then I thought it will be. Next I want to paint bottom part with black regular paint and upper part with special heat-resistance one. cheers, Michal
Just recived hood after enamel. It looks really good I think So next little step is done. I also found nice rapid for it - not exectly from 2827, but still better then new one. before: after: rapid: cheers,
Excellent work! Any update?? I'm eager to see as I have recently got one in similar condition to your own.
