i couldn't resist the opportunity of getting a Coleman 214 Kerosene Lamp to add to my collection.Having put a new coleman #21 mantle on it and firing it up, i was impressed at how bright it was, and by comparison it seemd to be a little brighter than an x246 Tilley...
is there a difference in CP? I noticed that the coleman mantle seemed to have a much closer weave than a standard Tilley mantle so would this account for the apparent increase in brightness?

It's rated at 200cp., and in my opinion a tighter woven mantle is better, but the modern Coleman mantles are of much poorer quality than they used to be.

Really bad quality. Several years ago I purchased about 6 nr 21 mantles. Out of the 6, only two worked; the rest simply developed holes the minute they were burned off and inflated. I complained directly to a Coleman rep at the plant. They did not exactly bust their a.. to satisfy the problem but did send me a "2 mantle pack" of new mantles. So much for customer relations.

I'm being rather lucky lately then, i've fitted two 21's on a Coleman 285, two on a 295 one on my very bright 201 with no issues, some tied some instaclip, i've just bought and am fettling a 220k, reckon i may have cooked my goose now then!
