I think what I am holding in my hand is an example of the Gloria “Hurricane Lantern” that is seen in the advertisement here. It was found in Tasmania, Australia. Given its comparative rarity, I thought I would start this thread, as I work through the lantern, to see what feedback CPL members might be able to provide on the lantern itself. I will post this lantern in the Reference Gallery when I’ve finished getting it up and running. The advertisement linked above is from 1929, and refers to a 400cp Hurricane Lantern, with an illustration similar to mine. I know of one more of these found in Tasmania; one found in mainland Australia (@Graham P); one awaiting a slow train to Stinkpot Bay that came to Australia relatively recently from the USA; another that USA one (information from A Keep); and a similar lantern, with a different burner, and with a Gloria (Melbourne) badge (A. Keep). Cheers Tony @Graham P @Akeepsake @Mackburner @Lamp Doctor
An excellent find! This link shows relevant information. https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/australian-gloria-lamps-lanterns.1543/
Thanks, Jeff. I’ll ask Kevin about that paperwork. I note also that it is Mick Emm’s lantern (referred to by me above as the one with the badge) that has the different burner: 1918 GLORIA LIGHT COMPANY Tony
Jeff I will be doing a trawl through catalogues and advertisements to get a handle on time, variation etc. One of the reasons for starting this thread now, rather than wait for the fettle/Reference Gallery, is to see what other Members know about this lantern. Gloria, especially Gloria in Australia, was pretty fast and loose with their models. I was looking at some of my Gloria burner caps yesterday and noted three different threads among 4 caps! Cheers Tony
Tony I believe your lantern (identical to mine ) was most likely manufactured in America and shipped here to sell by Gloria Melbourne in the twenties before they started manufacturing their own which was similar but with a unique burner assy and vent anomalies The earlierst Australian ad for these actually illustrates the American Oxo gas#12 as it shows plainly the unique ball nut with a shaft through it The only known example I have seen of this model has other variations to yours , therefore yours in question is often confused with it ! As more examples have been found here than in the US that I know of this adds weight to my assumptions. Your lantern has also been mistake for a Tures and owning a Tures I can compare and the vents are practically identical Also an illustration on the instruction leaflet for a Tures looks very similar as well . I believe the first Australian model of yours which I know of only 2 was badged accordingly and at first glance looks similar except for the dual air intake tubes I suspect it came out late twenties or early thirties however Gloria Aust continued to use the American oxo gas version in their ads So it’s hard to date precisely Above are pics of the two together
Well done Tony, another lantern saved for the enjoyment of those in the now and the future. Enjoy Pete @Tony Press
This lamp is now in the Reference Gallery, here: Gloria No. 12 Hurricane Lantern (var. C) Cheers Tony
