Hi there. New to the forum and joined specifically to try to find help with a Montgomery-Ward 134G. Specifically I need a new pump leather and possibly a fill cap seal. Are there any sources out there? I got the 134G and a late 1940s Coleman 200A "free" so I don't have much in them but would like to keep it that way and still get some use out of them. I'm a longtime Coleman user and "collector" and I know the 200A can be resurrected fairly easily and affordably but I really don't "need" another working Coleman. I've got a late 60s 228F in near-mint condition I bought used for something like $25 6 or 7 years ago and a NorthStar I bought new when those were first introduced almost 30 years ago I keep fueled and ready for power outages, etc. I DO "need" this M-W 134G to do something to light up my life and right now its looking like "converting" it to AC or DC as a desk/table/hanging lamp or outdoor/emergency lantern might be the best or at least most practical way to return it to service. It's all there and I think completely restorable and even functional now IF I can find a way to pressurize it and keep it that way and I DO hate to butcher it but it's not much good the way it is. If someone out there is looking for a parts/project lantern I'd probably be open to parting with it for sale and/or trade for Coleman products so I can keep my "collection" pure. Welcome, @CJM. I’m sure one of your countrymen will arrive with the information you need, but your M-W will be able to be restored to working order. If you want pre-made parts have a look at “Old Coleman Parts” online and see whether those parts are there. Cheers Tony
@CJM The pump leather should be the same size as a Coleman pump leather. Unless the pump leather is damaged you should be able to soak it in some oil. Some will use neatsfoot oil but for me I just use chainsaw bar oil. As for the filler cap seal well if you can find the right sized O-Ring it will do the job nicely. If you have a hole punch set you can make your own filler cap washer from Viton rubber. If you need more help please feel free to PT,personal text, me. Cheers, Norman
The leather was completely shot and it's substantially larger than a Coleman leather. 3/4" vs. 1/2" or so I'm guessing without pulling a Coleman apart. A plumber friend on FB turned me on to www.lehmans.com and I'm hoping one of their 3/4" x 3/8" water pump leathers will get me going. For $7 or so I think it's worth a shot. Thanks for the help so far. I'd done a fair amount of research on these lanterns previously but there just isn't a lot of info out there on them and most online forum posts are about what a challenge they are to restore, find parts for etc. This one is a straight up BEAST compared to any Coleman. It dwarfs my 228F. The tank looks to be roughly 1 quart capacity. It's big and that's why it has such a large pump. Maybe there is a Coleman leather that will fit but I don't think it's in a NorthStar, 228F or 200A and that kind of covers the whole Coleman line as far as "size".
As @Tony Press suggests, try www.oldcolemanparts One of these for the filler cap, Filler Cap Gasket One Piece and one of these for the pump Leather Pump Cup it's bigger than the more modern ones. I think Mike might be a little generous with the size but I can assure you, if it fits a 220B, it will fit your 134 G. I know because I've just compared the pump cups on my own 134 G and 220B.
@CJM Yes, the pump bore is approximately 3/4". That size of pump cup was also used on the 118 table lamp with slant generator.
