Hello, My lantern gives off a kerosene smell when on. I have another kerosene lamp that doesn’t (vapalux m320). Can someone please let me know what might be causing this? The pressure in the tank is constant. The light is bright and doesn’t pulse. There is a adjustment screw at the top of the lantern. What does this do? Maybe compensate for different elevations for air/fuel ratio? Thank you, William
Hi @Willyh I have seen quite a few threads on the forum about paraffin smells, sometimes coupled with CO detectors going off so you may want to be aware of that? I believe that the most common is for the ceramic mantle holder to come loose.. Check for any loose parts and have a browse for similar posts on here? Regards
Thanks guys. Appreciate the responses. Will check to make sure everything is tight. I did notice some kerosene in the pump shaft in the tank. Maybe there is a small leak from the NRV and I am just smelling the kerosene? Tank pressurized great and maintains pressure, so not sure.
Fill the tube with some kerosene and push it into the tank. it will flush dirt , if there is any, from the seal.
Also, there are two different kerosene smells: liquid fuel smell and escaping unburned fuel vapour. I have a Petromax that has the latter and it really smells gross. Raw kerosene I don't mind so much but unburned vapour means there might be a potential leak somewhere around the jet so you could try tightening it up a bit.
Thank you again for the replies. I have tried tightening everything up and everything seems tight. The only other place I’m thinking there might be an issue is the top of the lantern. Please see the attached photos and let me know if anything seems out of spec.
I think it works better when you measure the distance between the jet top and J-tube yourself in mm. From the picture it is hard the measure correctly. As for the screw: remove the sharp point, it will "ruin" the J-tube, by making a dent in the tube.
