This lamp shines very well.
Where exactly and when would it produced ?
Is the technique similar to Coleman ?
Is the Gloria brand still available ?

This is an Australian-made Gloria lantern. It was made by the Gloria Light Company of Australia in Melbourne in the (?late) 1930s.

It does not have a model number on it, but it is identified as Model “M” by @Mackburner in his Pressure Lamp Catalogue.

Australian Gloria pressure lamps went out of production in the very late 1930s.

I’ll post details of this one in the Reference Gallery later today and you will get to see all the components.

Thanks, Bob. The pre-heater on this one works very well, but it doesn’t have the “S” shape at the bottom and it was a bit fiddly getting the burner on and off.

Bob, would you mind if I posted a photo of that odd pre-heater of yours when I put this lamp in the Reference Gallery (the one you lit at Staffordshire Reef).

Yes, I have the red-capped hood (vent); and other variations of this model exist. Gloria Australia seemed quite relaxed about mixing parts between models.

CORRECTION: this lantern identified as Model "W" (not M) in Neil's CPL. (It must have been the southern hemisphere playing with my memory).

I’m now starting on one of the variations of the Australian-made Gloria 100.

Mine is closer to the @Mackburner and @Matty examples shown here:

I have one of these Gloria 100s without the Preston loop, but I haven’t looked hard enough to determine whether the loop has been cut off and the vapouriser (generator) reformed.

I’ve made some progress on this lantern.

I have another Gloria 100, but in worse shape and without a filler cap. I thought this second 100 had a different vapouriser (generator), but close inspection reveals that it has had its Preston loop cut off!

I note that the jet on both these 100s is pretty large.



I will get one fully functional lantern from these two.

More than a few days, I think. I’m enjoying working through these old bits of Australian pressure lamp history, and trying to sort out the sequence of the many different, unidentified Glorias that came out in the late 1920s and 1930s.
