I read in Jim Dick book that a R1 conversion lamp which had a table lamp gallery style was released in America. Does anyone know if this is how it would have looked? Or did it have the latter R1 Fount? Any help would be much appreciated as I know there are alot of people that have so much information on this forum, which might be able to answer this question thanks.
I have seen three of them, they all had the later style tank; but it looks good with the early tank also.
A.W.Thacker started in the US in 1951 and though it is possible they sold that R1 with the table lamp burner, I have not seen any evidence of it. I have several catalogues showing this era tank. It would have had a plated reflector too.
@paul m Paul, is that an original Tilley packing box? I read an interesting article in regards to Tilley, packing boxes and the move to Ireland. The Americans were so unhappy about the packing in 1962 that they decided to get boxes made in America and pack the lamps into them themselves. I wonder if those American made boxes have "Printed in the US" or similar Tilleys' answer as to why the packing had become so poor was, that when they moved to Ireland they didn't take any of their packing staff with them.
Matty, when I said " that R1" I was referring to the shape tank that was in the original post. Just for interest. this is dated 19 January 1962.
Gotcha. I thought you were talking about the lamp in the images that you showed that showed the flounder lamp type head. I can only assume that large consignment is the one that broke the camels back as far as Thacker was concerned and he decided to pack the lamps himself after it arrived.
@paul m Hi mate I was wondering has the fount got the Tilley name and owl stamped on the side of the fount? Also is the gallery the older one with the springs (part no 217) on the inside or the later one with the springs on the outside? Here is a picture. Thanks.
