This is probably a stupid question but what is the actual difference between the tilley mantels for the 246 lamps and the Austramax lamps?
I ask because I have a few Austramax mantels not not any Tilley ones as of yet and I am keen to try I of my newly acquired tilley lamps out with out having to wait for postage from interstate.

    1. Tilley are open top and bottom and tie on both ends (double tie) .
Austramax are only open on the top (single tie).
    2. Tilley are a larger mantle.
    3. Genuine Austramax mantles shrink down quite small compared to Tilley.

Some members have unpicked the bottom of single tie mantles to use on Tilley. Usually Chinese mantles but I'm not sure it can be done with am Austramax mantle.

Patience is a necessary tool in a fettlers toolbox.

Thanks for the explanation. Not having dealt with tilley before I was not sure. Only ones I have played with is the austra-max and the Coleman Gas lantern ones. I have an early one of those I might have to dig out and have a play with too now I think of it.
    Thanks again

    Hi Rob,
no stupid questions here mate
every day a school day, for me anyway

good advice already for you

Because the tilley burner sits over the vapouriser it has 2 holes of different sizes, the standard 164X mantle supplied by Tilley was pre-tied to give a good fit on the burner ..

G'day mate, thankyou for that its very informative.
I appreciate everyone's help and info.
I will just have to sit on my hands and be patient and wait for the correct items to arrive so I can put them back in working order.
    Cheers
    Rob

If you can find any generic D3 mantles at your local camping store, then they will work well enough to try it out.

and forgot to say that you can assemble and test without a mantle using low pressure ? without a glass as well if away from draughts

there is a great series of threads by tony press, heres a screenshot,
i cant do the link on my phone but a quick search with the search bar should find it..

on the first page, (scroll down a bit) he tests a tilley and because the mantle hasn’t been fitted it’s possible to see some issues that need to be fixed?
anyway, hope you find it useful mate

    cheers
