    Hi,

I belong to the Coleman Collectors Forum & one of the members there took this picture that I found very helpful. I am posting it with his permission.

The 24A Peerless & the 111 Peerless are both rated at 500CP but the comment was made that the 24A seems brighter in output.

I hope this helps someone else :)

I tend to agree. Reading the packaging, the 111 makes claims to be more rugged, and that may be at the expense of intensity.

    I fitted a 24-A to a 500cp., Petromax lantern and it's excellent!

The Peerless 111 mantles which I had, both delveloped huge holes when they were burning off, so I won't get any more of those.

Other folk have not had that problem with the 111, so perhaps I was unlucky, Jeff.

Hi Jeff, I had the same happen with Coleman#21 mantles! Never had holes burning in mantles (when first lit) before, wether using cheapo "No Name" or branded ones. Guess sometimes a "dud" batch shows up. (I got a full box of #21's, so hopefully not to many of them are affected  )

    Best regards,

    Wim

I've never had any problem with the 111's developing holes, whether when burning off, or in general use. They are slightly larger in diameter than the 24a from Peerless, and the 111's seem to want a good pressure to run them at full benefit.

Both of the large size 500cp mantles from Peerless are good quality, and sturdy. I like them both.

Hello Wim, I have also had that problem with Coleman number 21 mantles as have many other folk.

I reckon that bad batch is still in circulation, Jeff.

I just received some Peerless 24A and Peerless 1111 mantles from the USA. It took a while because there was a customs charge and an £8 handling fee from the Royal Mail for the sake of the £3.54 customs charge.

Anyway, I haven't tried many different mantles on my 500 HK Petromax lanterns but after being rather underwhelmed by the standard Petromax mantles I decided to try Coleman Gold Top 1111 mantles. These seems very good being both bright and durable but I had heard people rave about Peerless mantles. I tried a Peerless 24A this evening and it was truly blinding. Quite incredible. I will try a test of a Coleman 1111 and a Peerless 24A side by side. When my 3rd Petromax is fettled I will compare with a Luxor or Butterfly mantle as well.

Interestingly, my geiger counter gets quite excited by the Peerless mantles so, as expected, they are radioactive (thorium) but the Coleman Gold Top 1111 does not appear to be radioactive at all. I was surprised by that as the Gold Top is both bright and white. I may be that my European supplied Gold Top is different to the US ones.
