After 15 years or more of Coleman, this is my first Petromax, a 829.

Nice images. Completely different to the Coleman's which you're used to, I'm sure you'll come to appreciate this type of lantern.

Oh, this Petromax has caused me a few new cuss words :p but in the end it turned out to be my fault for not preheating it enough...

    Congratulations on your first Petromax.
I see there is still snow there.
You have to preheat for at least 90 seconds with the Rapid or alternatively with two bowls of spirit.

    Regards Reinhard

The alternative is better and softer for the mantle, and also more fun :D/
I start all my lamps like this ( Petromax, Optimus, Hipolito, Tilley, Bialaddin & Vapalux )

So you all preheat with 2 bowls of spirit and as the second bowl is about 1/2 gone, start pumping but leave valve closed until spirit is nearly all consumed and then open valve?

I never do it that way.
If it's not much below freezing where you are, one full cup should absolutely be sufficient, but there are variations in lanterns there. And never with any pressure in the lantern at all until just before the meths is about to expire and it's time to light the mantle. Then you close the vent screw and start to pump.

I can just aswell quote Phil from another topic, because that's the way to do it:

If you use an in-built pre-heating torch, it's a totallay different story, of course.

Is it marked with a Greatz only ?
If so give her a matching globe.

Well it was common before Pelam took over the brand that lanterns where sold with an E&G marked globe.
Now I am writing this I wonder if I even ahve seen only G marked globes.
