I have an enamel hood which has the familiar problem with chips and rust. I intend to wirebrush off as much rust as I can and then paint the whole thing matt black. Will something like this be up to the task? It does not need to be baked in an oven to cure: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_175718_langId_-1_categoryId_165495 Is there any special surface prep I could do to the remaining enamel to ensure good paint adhesion? Are there any general tips for painting hoods that I should know?
Hi David, You might want to take a look at this product. VHT Flameproof Paint I use the satin clear on lantern frames all the time rather than a silver paint. I have heard of people using it on ventilator caps. It's a dull finish unless you use the satin clear. There is a bake/cure procedure following application. The other option is here. Independence Porcelain Enamel They have all the "frit" colors to do lanterns. Their prices are reasonable. But shipping would just kill you. Bob
Hi david i assume it is a tilley \vapalux type hood i think if i was doing it i would tap the hood with a hammer not beat it to death to try and chip the remaining enamel off most likely be rust under it anyway! it will chip off then wire brush or sandblast the top then degrease it just wipe over with meths and slap the paint on you have the link to these paints do require heat to cure, i reckon heat from the lit lamp will do it. Nice to see you on here dave cheers pete
