Advice please on how to paint the fount of a Tilley tl10 please. What type of paint, and do I need to prep the surface first? How do I go around masking the areas I don't want to paint? I have seen some jobs done here and they look very professional, so I cannot believe it is simply masking tape. Thoughts and advice as usual please and thanks in advance

I use masking tape to shield bits I don't want painted. I use the blue masking tape because it seems to come away more easily than the cream masking tape.

I have a fine artists paintbrush to tame any edge that might build up as a result of using the tape.

If the tank is polished, give it the once over with 000 steel wool before painting.

If the tank is painted already it may need to be made smooth, first by using 0 steel wool followed by 000.

If the tank paintwork is really uneven and flaky you might need to use a paint stripper.

I use auto paint in what seems to be called "rattle cans" in your part of the world. You don't need high temperature paint for the tank (although VHT-brand Universal Gold is a good approximation to Tilley gold).

    Cheers

When painting brass you must use a etching primer first some paints have this in them now .
Why the paint on some of the Tilley bases is hard to remove is its the etch primer they used first.
