A little while ago, it was posted that fairly local to me I can obtain paraffin from Local Fuel garages. Before I do this, I was wondering if any of you had tried low odour Paraffin and your thoughts on it.

This in turn led me to ask if a well maintained lamp or stove smells with even standard Paraffin. What do you all use? both for indoor use and outdoor use?

My wife hates the smell so I need to find something that will keep the pong down for when we are staying in the Static shared with the rest of my family.

My experience is that if the lamp is working correctly then there is virtualy no odour when it is running. There could be some on start up (especially if you have a flare up :) ) and there always is on shut down. A good idea is to start and shut down the lamp somewhere else than where you are using it.

I agree with Nils on this and usually fire up my lamps outside. With regards to lamps indoors I genrally prefer not to do this partially because murphy's law dictates that there will be a smoke detector that will go AWOL on me and from a safety point of view I prefer not to have them indoors when scouts are running loose. I would suggest have something else for inside and keep SWMBO happy!
Incidentally I filled up with heating oil yesterday from my nearby Local Fuels station and if you haven't got a container they sell empty 20 litre ones for a fiver. no more B&Q rip off for me!

In France you can pay extra for the "non-odour" petrole, but I haven't found much difference.

Only had a smoke detector go off when the Aladdin 21 got a bit enthusiastic. Backed the wick off and all fine again - that was on 28sec heating oil. It would have done the same on regular paraffin (same stuff really).

I don't really find any smell when I light my Aladdins. They do smell when you turn them off, so leave them on until time for bed. Make sure you turn them off in a different room than the bedroom though. ;)
