Dears, I am going to fettle my Petromax 824 N. I am not sure if that lamp should have that paraffin preheating dish with that perforated cone or maybe it was looking just like R 826 with spirit type preheating dish. Such a spirit preheating dish is included in that particular lamp (and the very old rare design of that dish), but I am still not sure if this is correct and not some replacement. Some pics attached below so you can assess condition/completeness of that lamp. Barely visible scratches – most likely 3 27, so maybe march 1927, but I am not sure. „3” is clear, „7” – lets say visible, but that „2” between – well there should be something there, so most likely „2”. One option that I consider is to follow @Camp numao project Petromax 824 and try to have such a lamp model with perforated cone. From the other hand all these parts look reasonable together and there is an example of 824N with spirit preheating dish Petromax 824N and my priority is to keep that lamp close to original/manufactured condition. Is it possible that Petromax 824N was manufactured with spirit preheating dish and looked just like 826 R model? I will appreciate all advice. All the best, Piotrek
Unfortunately, I can't offer any advice because I lack the knowledge of those of you here. One thing I can say is that it looks like a very good condition 824N. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Thank you @Camp numao I really enjoy the fact that there are still some mysteries even about these lamps At the beginning I was going to ask you for cone dimensions etc. to try to make one. Now I am more and more inclined to repair the lamp based on existing parts. There is similar situation with Px 824S: with cone 1930s Petromax 824S | Classic Pressure Lamps & Heaters with regular preheating dish: 1930 824 S | Classic Pressure Lamps & Heaters and Petromax 824 S | Classic Pressure Lamps & Heaters If there were significantly more N/S with cone than without, that would be more likely that cone version is the proper one. But in situation 50/50 and considering that this particular lamp has very old and rare preheating dish (less likely to be added and replaced) then it seems to be an original configuration. Maybe someone have access to more docs and can verify.
From the documents I have access to (and there are many, thanks to Neil RIP and Jörg) there's evidence for the 824 from 1927 to 1933, and for the 824N from 1930 to 1937. The picture from the 1927 document 633p "operating instructions" for the 824 shows a normal preheating dish and the lantern is intended to be operated with "Gasolin, Benzin oder Benzol" which means petrol or Benzene in English. All other documents show the cone shaped preheater, which is supplied from the extra reservoir. That kind of preheater should work with almost all fuels, including paraffin and alcohol. The operating instructions, however, say that the 824 / 824N is intended to be operated with paraffin (kerosene). From the documents there's no evidence for the 824S, but since the type plate clearly shows that model name, and the specimen shown matches the appearance for 824 / 824N with the cone shaped preheater, it should appear at some point in time in some document as well. Any information about that would really be appreciated.
Thank you @Martin K. for that research and shared information. This is very helpful and how smart of me for asking here for help instead of constructing that cone and changing lamp configuration So Petromax with cone shaped preheater is still my "dream" all the best, Piotrek
