greetings from Finland. beginner here hey. i bought a petromax 826 light and would like to know if this is how old and rare. the bottom is labeled 341. I thought the price was good when I paid 40euro. and i use google translator
Maybe made in 1964? There should be four digits on the bottom of the tank. The globe is a later replacement, and the control knob is strange looking. It appears someone did some modification or repair to it. Nice find!
Welcome, I wuldn't have bought it. But at the same time, I don't know how rare these are in Finland. The knob, @george, is referring too looks to be the insert of the old double style knob. More starnge is the spare (?) glad nut hanging there. All in all it works great, like it should, so good lantern.
Thats a very good find. 40€ is a bargain for this old lantern Its an old lantern , as it has the 826 embossed on tank As it has no dash between the digits, its either Jan 1934 or march 1941 I don't recall which one is right. But with 826 on tank for sure no lantern with four digit on base. Only lantern from sixties have the well known 4digit code
@bp4willi Thanks, Willi! I screwed that one up! I should have mentioned those from the 1960's are "stamped" and the "E" would not be present in the "G", either. I see the " 3 7 1", hand scratched. @WimVe Right you are, Wim. Two piece seems to hint at 1941 vice 1934. That's a nice Petromax!
That's an old one. Probably 1930s or 40s but early 50s is still a possibility. Not from the 60s. I don't know about the pricker knob but it appears somewhat special/different, with some numbers on it. The vaporizer gland nut area appears to have some leak? What's the roundish depression on the fount? Is that a reflection or am I seeing things? Looks too uniformly round to be just a dent.
there are a few dents and scratches in the lamp, and there were leaks. I unzipped it into pieces and polishing and sealants exchange. I'll put new pictures when I get it done.
hey little question, when the needle is up and you start pumping the pressure into the cold tube, the light kerosene starts coming out of the nozzle. Is there a seal missing or is there a feature in the old one? the new ones have a valve, but this one is a bit different
There's no seal or foot valve for the old one of yours. Usually, you'd need to preheat with alcohol or spirit till its hot enough before pumping it up. The needle/jet is not meant to seal pressurized kerosene. It might hv a small leak initially but the heat's normally sufficient to vaporize it before you turn down the needle for full fuel supply. If there's really too much leak, then the jet or needle could be worn and need replacement.
thanks for the rattling, so i thought there should always be a soft ignition. but it's always good to make sure when i'm not yet fully familiar with the device
Congrats. !!! Currently don't have fun to light my lanterns. Evenings still cold outside. And corona is watching us....
personally i like to burn petromax in winter in Finland, snow and light the best if only that light would scare off corona
