Ok, I have a number of unrestored R1's that I'm about to tackle and return to service.

Being a stickler for period detail, I've noticed that I have two types of guard (see pics). One of these has three concentric rings, the other four.

I know that the first R1's had a very different guard to the ones shown here, but which of these variants in my pics is the earliest, and does anyone know a reasonably accurate date range for either type?

Being cheeky, could someone who's really in the know please give me a brief tutorial on dating the R1? I've had a look on here and the best I can find seems to be either pre 1950 or post 1950 - based mainly on whether it has a copper reflector or not.

If it helps, I've got one with a copper reflector, another with a wooden handle, a few with a metal folded handle and an R1A from Dec 1961 (from stamp on base)

Lots of questions... I'll stop now!

    Cheers brethren!
