Small hole repair

Hi .can anyone offer advice on how to fix a small hole on 300x bi Aladdin tank. It is a pin hole near the base of the tank

Underneath or on the side? how close to the rim? Are you quite sure there is only one? A picture is worth a thousand words...

Hi Simon, I have had a Bialaddin 300X fount with multiple stress cracks in the side wall. I had to write it off as there was no way of telling when assitional cracks would develop. All other things being equal, and if it is just a single pin-hole, it should be easy and safe enough to solder it with ordinary lead solder and a good rosin flux. Preparation is very important. The brass in and around the hole should be shiny and clean and care should be taken that the solder flows and wets the brass well, without too much heat being transferred to the adjacent areas on the fount where it might compromise other soldered joints.

Hi everyone. Recent update after stripping paint off the lantern. The small pinhole as mentioned is now a little more serious. There is a slight crack at the bottom of the tank.
Can this be soldered or scrapped

A slight crack is akin to being slightly pregnant. If it were mine I would shop around for another fount. They are not that scarce.

Cleaned split ( dremelled to an inch of its life) soldered. Checked pressure -no leaks. Hopefully happy days. Picked another font up excellent condition but smaller filler size.
Would it rearly matter or why did they change from large to small

Smaller diameter was civilian and larger was military. In practical terms it won't matter...

If your solder has bonded in the crack and on the surface of the dremelled area, your tank should be fine.

Test it under full pressure.

Have filled it with water and pumped it up with my finger over the vaporizer hole.
Is there a better way to test it to full pressure.

That’s a good start.

Of course the ultimate test is to put the lantern back together and fill it with kerosene, pump it up and see what happens.

It’s looking good so far.
