    The Registered Design number dates from 1923. Apparently it had a legal effect for 23 years, but it does continue to appear on some tanks after 1937 - even into the 1940s.

    @Henry Plews has suggested using felt in the bottom of the socket below the control cock, which is good advice. You could also use a circular piece os brass mesh.

    Both options are 100 times better than something resembling a miniature sock handmade by The Borrowers, which is what Tilley thought was a good idea ](*,) :roll:

    @podbros

    I have seen some XN and GF control cocks retrofitted with this type of cylinder of porous brass. I think they were used in Thacker-marketed lamps in the 1960s.

    I wouldn’t recommend going this far. Felt or brass mesh will do.

    Thank you guys for all the good advice. I’ve almost completed the restore and only have the pump to do over the weekend then she’s completed.

    I decided do put no filter in the cock and will see how she runs. Worse case scenario I can always put a filter in if I have any issues down the track.

    The base rim stamp is Rd 681681. This designs registry number dates to about March 1921. It would have been valid for 7 years with an option to extend for a further 7 so would have ceased to be legally valid by 1936. I suspect Tilley were still marking the lamps after 1936 though so it is not really a fixed date point. ::Neil::

    I have been looking into the Rd number for a long time.
    I must have 20 lamps that have GF control cock sockets that have Rd numbers on them.
    I also have many lamps that have GF control cock sockets that don't have Rd numbers on them.
    The Rd stamp was definitely after 1940 and if the laws of probability count, I'd say to 1943/4.
    Why some and not others, I have no idea.

    To explain
    GF was 1940+.
    EX100 and PLs were replaced with the porkpie X246 in 1946.
    So a GF EX100/PL is between 1940 and 1946.
    I have more GF EX100/PLs with Rd numbers than don't so that statistically brings it up to 1943/4.

    The reason for asking about this decal is that the R1 that has it, also has an Rd number on it.

    I thought this decal didn't start until the porkpie X246 in 1946+.

    I stand corrected by @Mackburner: 1921 not 1923. And I note also that I made a weird mathematical error to have written 23!

    Apologies.

    @Anthony

    I’ve checked my Tilleys and do not have any with gold and black decals and the RD number.

    Cheers

    The end result looks awesome! Now you'll have to find an outer shade to really complete the effect!

    And @Jean J if you're bored of all those Tilley table lamps, I run a collection service for unwanted strays.... it's like a donkey sanctuary but much more fun!! ;)
