It's like a moth to a flame..... I'm walking around the local boot sale with the missus with no intentions of adding to the collection...... & there sits a sad, neglected, dirty but intact, common-as-muck x246b. How could I not buy it for £7?? Empty out the decades-old fuel, replace the crumbling seals & a good clean was all it needed. Runs lovely. In hindsight, I should've bought the whole lot of lamps & blowlamps the guy had, but funds were limited.
Tell me about it, I just bought a similar X246B to go with another two similar X246Bs I bought a while ago, all for peanuts, why not?
I know what you mean, Wirdy. It's like a magnet drawing you in! Several years ago, I was checking out what we call over here a "yard sale". People get rid of crap they don't want. Anyway, the guy had a Coleman 220 (can't remember the letter anymore, but it was one of the last ones made in that series) for sale. It was still in the opened box so I figured it was used and kicked around. He wanted $10 for it. Remember, it was in the box, sight unseen. Okay, I can use it for parts. So I offered him $5 for it. He whined a little but agreed on $5. Long story short, came home, opened it up and what do I find, a NOS Coleman 220? with all the bells and whistles! Even the warranty card was still there!! So, you just never know.
@Wirdy @george and @BigStevie i know just how you guys feel. It’s so sad, we seem to be afflicted similarly. When I go to a what we call, a garage sale, it seems my eyes have a purpose of their own ...... They immediately and expertly scan the venue and within seconds they have found anything that resembles a lamp. But as you guys, I just live with this affliction and stoically ponder the next find, that treasure ..... the quest. Happy hunting Pete

Cheers everyone. The cheaper buys seem the more satisfying somehow. If I was forever chasing the rare grail lamps & spending big amounts doing so, I don't think I'd be any happier. In the words of a YouTube'r I enjoy watching (Hubnut), I'm going to 'celebrate the ordinary' & continue to enthuse about a £7 tilley more than something like the X410 that's currently on eBay & with bids heading north of £325!!
Guilty as charged! However, I do have another 3 so may be able to keep one for my own collection. Still paying off my recent holiday so making no excuses for selling.
@Jean J ....and giving the opportunity for other collectors to get their hands on a fairly rare lantern. Having collected lamps for a few years now i still like to get a bargain up and running however, I am also trying to add some of the more unusual lamps to my collection. Personally I'm happy with both points of view and appreciate the opportunity to bid and possibly win bargains and rarities alike. regards, Jeremy

Ouch! The first mention of the dreaded ‘C’ word I’ve seen so far this year and I don’t mean Cancer! The thing is Wirdy, you just don’t know what’s going to turn up or where. That’s my main reason for never buying lamps off eBay. The thrill of the chase and all that. Having said that, if anyone offered to swap a crimson Bretby vase for a Tilley X410 I could definitely be persuaded.
