G'day, has anyone had any experience with resolving surface rust on EX 100 light reflectors. I am considering getting one of our local sandblasting firms to do their thing, and then Powder coating both sides of the reflector ( Say green on top and white underneath. My concern is how does powder coating handle heat. My next option is a lot of "elbow grease" and sand both sides and use heat resistant paint. I am sure many of you have had an experience with this predicament.

I don't know about the Tilley refelectors, but I'm pretty sure the Kayen ones were only ever painted. Powder coating can handle a bit more heat than ordinary paint, but not much more. It would probably be a good option though as the reflector doesn't actually touch the hood of the burner so it shouldn't get too hot.

Google "electrolytic rust removal" Works for steel and cast iron. I have used this on old engine parts simple to do washing soda water and low volt D-C power supply.

Graham, Do you mean as simple as good old washing soda crystals and a 12 volt battery charger ? Nils, I dare say painting may be the cheaper alternative, especially if the original was painted, they are Kayen reflectors I am talking about. But i did notice the underneath of the Kayen AP 2 that I e-mailed to you was Vitreous Enamel, so I assumed powder coat would be a similar finish

Interesting to know that with the enamel. Was that with a black top? The only Kayen shades I've really looked at have come from the steel tanked version so maybe they were a 'cheap' alternative. Powder coating does look like enamel but heat is still an issue. Probably not here though.

The electolysis sounds like a good idea. Leaves the steel undamaged.
