Hello all, here is my oldest Tilley lamp its the first of the EX4 Export Lamps. I was very excited to find this lamp as I know there doesn't seem to be many around, before I bought this lamp I did look in the reference galley and noticed Anthony's post so this is how I dated this lamp, I also spoke to him as well a great wealth of information from him, you can guess what happened of course I bought it. After a fettle and a few light ups as I wanted to use her more than a one off time while I was deciding whether I should leave her in original condition or polish her up, of course I couldn't help myself she had to be dolled up. Here are some photos in original condition, after fettle light up and finally bright and shiny, this is how I will leave this lamp for now. To re-paint or not i'm unsure at this present time, time will tell hmm what to do she looks great as is or does she? All done enjoy.
I personally would have left it in original condition too (and I hate original normally) but when a lamp is original as that and just looks right it should be left alone, it just doesn't look right with a newly polished tank and an aged top end.
@Buggerlugs Have you tried clear lacquer? A lot of the Tilley and Kayen lamps were lacquered brass rather than paint.
@Buggerlugs I'm not really fussed with what you do with it to be honest, just sharing my opinion and thoughts, its your lamp do what you like with it, its not me who's got to live with it.
@Nils Stephenson Thanks and yes we have on other lamps, this one will be gold paint, I prefer the gold.
@Buggerlugs fair enough, your choice at the end of the day, all the same it's still a beautiful looking lamp.
@Nils Stephenson Yes we have used clear this is what we spray on our table lamps as the cream isn't a high temperature paint, so we spray clear high temperature over the lamp then cook to cure.
Here are some photos of my Tilley EX4 all finished now, great weather so strike while the oven is hot, or should I say while the weather is great for spraying. Another one bits the dust thanks.
