The new reflector arrived today, the comparison picture is not the clearest, but still shows how the light projection is much improved. Still running on the 164 mantle as the 191 hasn’t arrived yet
You must be pleased ! I tried out one of base-camps 164 "pro" double walled mantles on a Guardsman last weekend. It seemed to end up the same size as the 191 mantle on my FL6. It might be a fluke or it might be useful one day..
Hi Darren I am new to this forum, I have just acquired a good condition FL6 and had it up and running last night. The only thing that could do with upgrading is the refector which has been over polished and is dull and has some copper showing. Where did you source the new reflector?
Welcome from Queensland Australia @Adrian murray Looking forward to seeing pictures of your FL6 running and your future posts. Cheers Pete
@Adrian murray Welcome. It may be very hard to find a replacement reflector. Someone here may have one. You could gently polish yours as best you can; or find a place to replate it. Good luck. Cheers Tony
Well… I’ve been shown that there are reflectors out there: vintage nos GENUINE TILLEY LAMP REFLECTOR FOR FL6 FLOODLAMP FLOODLIGHT no 752 | eBay Thank you, @BigStevie Cheers Tony
Thanks for all the welcome messages, I was extremely lucky and picked up the FL6 from an elderly gentlemen who was having a clearout. He had advertised on -Bay but it wasnt very well described and no one else bid and i got it for less than the price of a reflector on -Bay. I have been looking for years and could never justify some of the high prices that the sellers wanted. It is in great condition, no dings, all original except the paint which has been really well done. He threw in a modern military tripod and a custom professionally made mount (the laser cutting on it alone would have cost a fortune!) I have some storm lights and a couple of the fires (one chrome and one copper reflectors). in the photos you can see a blow torch i also got from him when i picked up the FL6, it is huge, takes 7 pints!!
Just reading this about plating on reflectors I recalled a visit to "Lucas" (Auto Electrics) factory in Melbourne Victoria approx 1968. We were shown the set-up for plating 30-40? or more headlight reflectors which were clear lacquered, then mounted over holes in a sphere which was electrostatic-ally charged and while under vacuum a silver wire was vaporised by an electric current which left a couple of atom deposit over the internal surface. It is quite possible that Tilley used the same method.. I did a quick google search for headlight reflectors resilvering --- there are some methods that may be worth trying
Unfortunately, a lot of vendors use the 'antique dealer' method of estimating asking prices i.e. the bigger it is, the more it must be worth...
The gentleman i got it from had obviously really looked after it before he stopped using it ten years ago, all it needed was a new mantle (he supplied 3)a good pre heat and it fired up straight away, good bright steady light
Hi Adrian and welcome! As you know, some folks on here have already taken the plunge and bought a new reflector.. the ones on eBay are new/old stock You have done very well with yours and it looks in great condition Well done with all your finds !
