Yep, almost £400 for this 'tarted-up for sale' Tilley SDR. It's the relatively more common version and doesn't even have the glass, which will be the hard part.

What will the next VL1 go for? - at these prices, I think I'm out of the market...

The £400 must be for the 'extra' high temperature paint,
at least the ad is honest..."looks good but is certainly not useable".
wonder what a useable one is worth ,probably less as it wont be as shiny...
I wonder if the buyer (or seller) is reading this?

I think the 'looks good but certainly not usable' refers to the plastic tube substituting for a globe. But high temperature paint isn't vitreous enamel and will soon look poor.

    I also wondered if the buyer and seller were members here. I think I have a spare No.78 globe hereabouts but I'm not parting with it... =;

There was an SDR a few of weeks back, that was not in the tidiest condition but it did still have it's original paint and some of the decal. Neither of the two have had a glass, (I do have one) yet this one makes £400 and the last one made £131.90. Most annoying thing was I was the under bidder on the last one and having lost it for a mere 58 pence that was the top bid. Had I entered £135, I would now be the proud owner of an SDR with original glass. :rage: :rage: :rage:

However bargains are still to be had on ebay as you will see in my next thread, which I shall write once I've had my tea.

Oh dear sorry Matthew, that was me! I bought that one. I felt a bit guilty spending that much, but felt a lot better when I saw that one go for £400! Sorry you missed out.

I showed it off to my father in law, and he said he had one like that. I told him it was very unlikely as they aren't that common, but low and behold he checked and it was one, glass and all. He bought it for about a tenner!

The one i got is an interesting one as the brass cage legs have a knurled foot that looks like the retaining nuts on a x246, yet they are actually part of the brass leg and have a thread that screws into the tank, in the same way as the first pork pie x246

I'm also interested to know what the reflectors are made from. I had to work hard to bring them back to a mirror shine. They didn't polish like Aluminium usually does, and I can't see aluminium keeping a shine for any length of time, yet the usage instructions foran SDR claim they are 'pure aluminium'

    Any ideas?

I'll post some pictures of these curious cage feet...

    Paul

Ahh so that was you. Yeh that price was pretty good, it looked quite rough but I bet with some TLC that has come up really well. I noticed those little extensions on that one, are they actually one piece with the leg or can you unscrew the leg from the riser? I wonder because it might have been Tilley using a standard leg from a storm lamp instead of making another as the SDR ones are longer. As far as I know the reflectors are alloy, I think over time with the heat it does get very soft though. There is an alloy reflector on my AL15 with seems very soft so perhaps those go the same way. See if your father in law will donate his to your collection as well. I'm assuming that you have a collection or your starting one any way. Or you could always make up for having the one on ebay and send it my way. ;)   No worries another will turn up one day and I'll get it. Look forward to seeing some pics of the lamp or both if you can, best regards Matt.

...and this one disappeared from eBay pretty sharpish after the listing appeared. I wonder how much that went for and who got it? - another bloody pirhana in the tank or one of the existing ones coming round for another bite..?

    More eBay shenanigans:-

Almost £200 for this do-nut missing vital parts.

Nearly £250 for this polished PL53 with missing air-button covers. Did they think they were bidding for the do-nut or what?

What is the world coming to? - or did I just miss something..? ](*,)

    Yeah - when I'm retired!

I just knew there had to be a reason why I've acquired hundreds of scruffy lanterns over the years... :p

Well that one (no glass and a detached frame leg where it joins the fuel tank) has re-surfaced. Looks like it was originally snapped-up by someone looking to make a killing... ;)

So someone bought it, got it home and immediately listed it back on Ebay. I can't be bothered to read the description again but it looks identical the original, the pictures are the same, the only difference I can see is the addition of "Very" and "large" in the title. I feel bad asking for a buy it now price anyway and trying to get things cheaper than their value but I couldn't do it and then list straight back on Ebay. Do we think there is something fishy going on, or just as David said?

I emailed the seller when he first removed the lamp to find out why and he told me ebay had cancelled his listings for some reason, so I think it is the same seller.

If it is the same seller, they've got two different eBay names - not beyond the bounds of possibility, of course...

Ah, now that depends on what you mean by "value". To me, it's value is about a tenner because I've got a better one sitting on the shelf behind me. The seller will have a different idea of it's value to him i.e. what he's happy to get for it and potential buyers will probably have various and different ideas of it's value i.e. what it's worth to them - what they're prepared to pay for it. And what it actually sells for on eBay will be different again, depending on a range of factors. The missing globe and broken frame leg will reduce it's saleability to a lot of folks.

So, as long as your 'value' is higher than the seller's 'value' you may be able to do a deal. We have a saying up here - shy bairns get no sweets. I'd have a punt if I were you, Matthew...

Yeh your right David, although, I thought the £400 pound one would be more within my value range. Not having the glass should put a lot of people off but because I have a glass I should have an advantage but I guess some times people just get carried away and honestly I wouldn't pay that much, for one that was complete with it's glass and in original condition. Maybe that's just me being tight though. I don't think I'll bother emailing him, it has to be something pretty special for me to do that and then I usually get turned down. When I do get an ok though I panic and don't know what to say. :-& :content: Not that I'll admit to having done that of course.
