Hi all hope everyone is staying safe and healthy and managing to keep away from this terrible virus. Ive been having a debate over whats more valuable/scarce the champagne or white shades for the table lamps. Personally i love the look of the champagne but that’s personal preference i guess. But i am very interested to hear everyone’s thoughts. Kind Regards Darren
Darren What about whether they have the top lip or not???? If you’re debating with yourself, you could get very uptight. Cheers Tony @Kiwiboy00
I prefer the white shades for use on a lit lamp, but those yellowish shades are fine display items and then there are the coloured reproduction shades, which are also okay for display. As yet, I have still not obtained one of the old shades which do not have a top rim.
I’m quite surprised to hear that Jeff, thought they would turn up in Shetland. The decorated shades fetch high prices but it’s a few years since I’ve come across one here in Aberdeenshire.
I’d be happy with either colour, with or without a lip..... I’ve yet to come across any of these shades, so if you’re feeling generous Jean, Jeff?
We have the advantage here in Australia with Kayens having the without lip shades. Not that much of an advantage though cos they are bloody rare. Kayen of Tilley. Decaled Tilleys are the prize in my opinion.
I just had these sitting on the table so I thought I'd crash Darrens post and post them here. @Jean J
Thanks guys, love the photos Tony & Anthony. I currently have 6 champagne shades, 1 white shade with the top lip, and another white shade no top lip that I acquired from Jim Dicks collection. Not sure if its a Kayen or Tilley, not sure on the differences. As for personal preference I love the champagne shade and the ambience that it gives off. Regards Darren
I don’t know either. We should do a post showing profiles of what we do have and compare with a known Tilley one in the UK.
Good idea Ants, I will unpack mine and take photos in the coming days. Would be interesting to see what the difference is from the Tilley vs Kayen shade. Regards Darren
@paul m & @Anthony Was the Tilley logo put on: 1. glass shades; and/or 2. vitreosil gloves? I’ve only seen the Tilley logo on clear glass (IIRC). Tony
The logo was on the early shaped glass shades. I think they did the shield and just "Tilley" I don't know if they all had the logo or not.
Doing a search on 'Indifferent' in this forum I see that Blanchard and Petromax lamps have been found with 'Indifferent' on the glass. Not much else I could find
Searching "Indifferent Glass" I found this. Doing a patent search on Putzler I found 2 Putzler patents for "Process for frosting glasses" and " Process for decorating glass bodies using ceramic paints". So "Indifference" refers to the coating rather than the glass. Does not explain the Blanchard and Petromax glass so there has to be more to it. If I have this all wrong please let me know. The patents are in German Espacenet - Original document Espacenet - Original document
