The lamp is Brass throughout. There are no markings on the Hood, the cap is enamelled and looks to be a slate blue colour. Apart from the fact that it is a Vapalux I am not sure whether it is a mongrel or pedigree. There is no pressure nipple. The only markings are on the cage. The pre-heater is plated Brass.
Hi Gavin. I'm not an expert but it looks good to me. Have a look in the lamp reference gallery under Vapalux 300 and see what you think. Regards, Jeremy
It is as near as I can find. There are three minor differences on mine. No pressure nipple, no embossing on the hood, Hood cap is more a saucer. Thank-you for posting.
No pressuire nipple and all brass suggests 1942 around the time they seem to have switched to the steel tank and dropped the nipple, Or perhaps after 1945 when the tanks were again made from Brass and the nipple was re introduced. My guess would be 1942. Not sure if it has the wrong pre heater fitting but if I am right about the date then it should have a simple cup and this has the full width type from later models. Otherwise looks good enough to me. There are multiple variations of Vapalux lanterns so a few differences are not important. Nice looking lamp. ::Neil::
As far as I can rationalise it, you either had a row of vertical slots in the collar or a row of holes in the preheater plate. The point of either being to surround the priming flame with a curtain of fresh air rather than have it all coming from one side as a draught, blowing the flame away from the vapouriser and burner. If (note, if) that's the correct logic then the lantern shown with one hole in the collar should be fitted with the wide preheater plate - as it is. I also think it's earlier, too...
Thank-you Neil and David. It would seem that I have an interesting Lamp, and may be the oldest one in my collection. The reason I am taking a more than normal interest in this lamp, came about when I first picked it up, it felt 'light' compared to my other Vapalux Lamps, so I assumed wrongly it was a more modern Lamp, in particular the Hood, along with the lack of embossed writing on it. I have until now not found a suitable Lamp for it, could my search be over!! With regard to your thoughts over slots, holes and air flow.
