The light in the shop doorway in the second picture looks to me like an electric arc lamp. Arc lamps need a relatively large and usually cylinder shaped housing above the arc. This contains the carbon rods and the ingenious mechanism whereby the carbons are fed into the arc as they are consumed. Carbon arcs give a bright light and made reasonably efficient use of the then very costly electricity, they fell out of favour due to the labour cost of daily "trimming" as replacing the carbons was known. The lamp in the first picture might also be an arc lamp, though the large globe might suggest multiple incandescent gas mantles, or even early incandescent electric bulbs.
