Are you sure the preston loop is actually steel (try with a magnet)? I have seen ones where they use some sort of alloy that could look like steel. I believe the allow preston loops are older than the all brass jobs but have no proof.
Spot on nils it's some kind of alloy! Why is the next question, maybe a heat transfer thing or a cleanliness thing, I can't see it being a cost thing? Gozzy
It is most likely made of " German Silver " which is an alloy more heat resistant than brass. Due its copper content it conducts the heat well and is stable enogh against oxidation in the plasma area around the mantle.
