I recently got a Petromax 829 that is fitted with a schrader valve instead of a pump.
Other than the famous auction site, where can parts be found?
I am in the US, but worldwide would be alright.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Hi. Try www.starklichttechnik.de The business is ran by Martin Sheerer. An enthusiast more so than a business man. Great service and website, I recommend this guy 100%.

Thanks for both answers, I went to one before the other, and solved the problem. I do not know if one seller is better than the other seller.

I tried www.starklichttechnik.de first, but, I couldn't place an order to USA, so I sent a message.
Well, I got a very fast reply from Martin.
Petromax parts are not shipped to USA. But, I am able to get a pump assembly and most of the other parts I wanted.

I love this global world I am in. I am having a stove part shipped from Kerry in Tasmania, and some lantern parts shipped from Germany. I regularly get stuff from The Fettle Box (UK). I use graphite foil from Trojandog, leather cups from Sefa in Turkey, and high heat washers from George in Scotland. NRV tools & parts from Stu (UK). And there's so many more places to list including all the friends in the USA that have sent things my way.

    I am so Grateful,
    Ken in NC

You able to locate a pump for Your Petromax? If so, I'm in need of the same and having trouble locating. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank You

I got a pump from the place I noted in the post above. there are some limitations of shipment to US, so he contacted me and sorted it out by email.

I should have ordered jets and needles from him at that time.

I put the parts on and:
Now, I have nothing but yellow flame and black, sooty mantle, and cannot solve it.

The gauge does not work. I can't find any info to fix it. So, I don't know the pressure.
The jet isn't too large, I assume, because the needle shuts off the jet.
I have set the gap above the jet to the right height.
I have the screw slot aligned up and down.
    I have clean clear kerosene.
I have preheated with alcohol, and am sure the vaporizer is hot.
I am using Peerless 500CP mantles.
I am holding pressure, no leaks.

    ****
I have an Aida 1500 working, but it pulses. It also has a gauge that does not work. (????????)
And that one will NOT shut off with the needle, it wants to leak out the jet.

    Thanks,
    Ken in NC

If you remove the burner assembly and open the valve (outdoors) do you see a fine stream of fuel coming from the jet? Is any fuel trickling or leaking from anywhere else? If all is good, do you pre-heat long and hot enough before before pressurising and opening the fuel valve? These lanterns do not shut off fuel via the needle. Some have a Tilley-style fuel valve in the valve body, and some not. The correct way to shut off is to release the pressure in the fount.

Hi Ken, if I understand correctly, you only needed the pump parts to replace the schraeder valve. Have you tried the lantern first (using the valve)? I would be surprised if that would make a difference, but you never know... One very common fault is a leak where the jet sits in (on) the generator. It is very important to check this, as it is easily overlooked. Is the jet still the correct size? Do you have one you are sure of it is OK? Then you can temporary swap jets to try things out. If you need a replacement, let me know by PT.

    All the best,

    Wim

I got an email, to check the valve, from someone else. I will do that to both.
The jet does shoot a stream. The Aida also leaks around the needle.
Yes, I do preheat. Sometimes it gets opened too soon, then immediately closed.
I never thought to pump AFTER preheat, until the other day. That works with the AIDA. That eliminates the leak problem, I then shut it down with the air release valve.

    Wim
I did not operate the Petromax with the schrader valve. I used the AIDA pump. I should add I replaced the NRV on the Petromax, it was leaking. So, using a bike pump, it would leak out the NRV.
I did check the jet seating, I think it is good.
I just ordered (2) German spare parts kits. I will then have jets and needles.

Are Peerless Mantles ok? .... Link

These lanterns are 'high-maintenance' toys. Not 'plug-and-play'.

    Thanks,
    Ken in NC

I'm glad you got it running.

If you have a leaky fuel valve and pressure in the fount, the vapouriser and preston loop fill up with fuel keeping the temperature too low during pre-heat. When eventually the fuel boils inside the vapouriser a lot of liquid fuel is initially pushed out through the jet instead of fuel vapour only, causing flaming. Pressurising after pre-heating circumvents this problem.

    The Petromax is not.

Another possibility with your Petromax (and pulsing Aida) is carbon build-up causing a partial blockage of the Preston loop. You can try clearing it with thin stranded steel cable after a combination of heating/quenching and/or soaking in caustic soda. Then blow out with aerosol carb cleaner. Be careful when heating because you would not want to desolder the loop from the main tube!

How does one get a wire to go 90 degrees into the loop? (The Preston Loop is the looped tube off of the vaporizer, correct?)

Thin wire from a bycicle brake will do.

Peerless mantles rock. Otherwise, get the bulb-shaped ones you see on Ebay sometimes. The closer the heat to the vapouriser the better the burn.

Thanks Al. I have Peerless and some Coleman Gold-Top and Silk-Lite. (All 11, 111, or 1111 recommended for 500 CP)
I bought a pair of NOS German parts kit from a seller in Japan. He sent me 5 bulbous mantles with it, for free.
Still getting the yellow flame and black mantle.
I cannot tell the pressure, the gauge does not read pressure. I have 2 pints of kerosene in the tank.
I have cleaned everything EXCEPT I did not remove the bottom section of the vaporizer that goes into the tank. I will do that next.

    Thanks,

    I did that this afternoon.
It runs good, and with a bright, white light.

The fuel pickup PIP is ok, but needs to be replaced in the future. I usually light it with alcohol.

I think that it MAY have been:
The ceramic burner was not tight.
The bottom section of the vaporizer & the Rapid lighter MAY have been loose on the lead washers, too. They came off too easily. I tightened them better when I re-assembled it.

BUT ... Now I see a flame at the 'Preston Loop' joint into the vaporizer. I believe it has a hole. I will have to sil-braze that.

    Peerless mantles ROCK!!

I have looked at it through an eye loupe, and I did a dunk test. The Preston Loop is not leaking air.
Unless the leak only shows up when it gets hot, that is when the flame shows up. at least a few minutes after the mantle is white.

I am not sure what to ask.

Could very well leak fuel and not air. Kero will creep through a fine crack that will not pass air even under pressure. Take a note of where the flame appears and re do the silbraze joint there. ::Neil::

Thank you. I will do that.
It is not clear exactly where the leak is, but yesterday I did see a bit of black, I assume is soot. That may be it. The flame is on the inside of the preston loop.
