Found the other day at a Flea Market. The only marking is on its pressure dial, which says, "White Mfg. Chicago". I would like some info if there is any paper on these. Thanks. Darien.
I don't have any paper on White at all. From Terry Marsh's research in the Chicago directories we know they were around from at least 1895 to 1903 making Gas fixtures. They seem to have been bought out by Turner Brass and from 1904 to 1907 are listed but the entries state "Gasoline Torches,Brazers, Furnaces, Oven Etc. Now Made and Sold by THE TURNER BRASS WORKS Franklin & Michigan Sts. 14 Phones, Main-3224" They then disappear from the directories. I therefore assume any product marked as White will date from 1907 or earlier and the last three years of production was actually re branded Turner product. ::Neil::
Thanks mac. I have found under the fount that this one is indeed marked White Mfg. Model 2. Under the fount. It had a plate someone had added to shore up the base. when removed it was stamped there.
I have read that time and time again and believed it. I now don't believe that to be the case though. Actually, I'm certain of it. Turner Brass Works bought the Blow Torch/Furnace part of White MFG Co business, not the White Mfg Co, itself. Turner did a similar thing with Acorn Brass and bought the Blow Torch side of the business from Acorn Brass. I have also believed that White MFG Co manufactured these Arc Lamps. I own one and have for sometime now. As an aside to researching another company I now firmly believe it was they that manufactured the Arc Lamps and White simply assembled them and added their own soldered tag onto the lamp.
