Whilst I'm teaching from home, which is certainly keeping me busy, it has also given me the opportunity to finally spruce my old Tilley orange top..all original bar the top lol.. quite pleased. The cage colour was a conundrum, really wasn't sure whether to go black, silver or..vintage gold..pleased I went with the latter.
Not tried yet..going to finish it first, needs an O ring on the control knob, couple of washers. Thanks guys...It is showing off your stuff I know but we are going to be very short on opportunities this year with whats going off. Martin
The fount looks well-lacquered if my eyes are not deceiving me. Nice job. That should keep it tarnish-free for years.
That look great I have 2 that I haven;t restored yet I may get around to doing one off them. Have you re-sleeved the top to address the delicate brass tabs that support the enamel top as they usually bend and break?
Indeed they we bent Gary but it looks like only the once so they straightened with some teasing. This is an obvious weakness when they are handled roughly, but now she's mine that isn't going to happen. Apart from the tabs being bent the hood was in remarkable condition, I suspect it was store with weight on its top at some point. Martin

Hi Martin, great work on the Tilley there Do you mind me asking what make/brand/colour of gold/bronze paint you used at all,please? The finish is very good.. have you got access to a spray gun?
Very nice restoration ,what did you use to paint the black part on the hood ,just asking as going back on previous threads on the forum other learned members tell us there is no paint that will stand up to the high temperatures that a hood reaches, Regards Ian.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. No spray gun just rattle cans. The base colour was Ford Arizona Gold..and Hycote.
@paparazi Fine job. I restored a Vapalux E41 1942, and I used a rattle can of Ford auto paint. The grayish color was very close to the original and apparently a popular color in the 1930's or '40's on Ford cars. It's surprising how close some of these colors come to the original. We can never match them completely since the weather and elements can and do change the colors. Age closes in on all of us, even the lamps/lanterns are not immune! lol
