Hi, My first post, I am having some problems with the lamp that I am fettling I have fitted a recon vaporiser and control cock the pump is working nicely and there are no air leaks, the problem is that the burner just flares like mad I have tried another burner but the problem is still the same just will not light up properly
Hi and welcome to the site, Did you preheat for long enough? two minutes seems to work for me on most of my B's, but longer is fine, i have to preheat twice on some of my table lamps.
Thanks I will persevere and as you suggest give it a good preheat, I have several other b lamps so will try swapping burners, what I have noticed is that when heating up without mantle I get a lot of flame from the bottom of the spigot
If by that you mean 'reconditioned', sorry, but there's no such thing. Tilley vapourisers were never designed to be anything other than a replacement item. When they reach the end of their working life the best thing is to do what Tilley intended - throw them away and fit a new one. You can faff about with them and try to remove the accumulated carbon inside using carburettor cleaner or an old bit of inner brake cable but the results are, at best, temporary and you may get a few more hours running time out of them - or maybe you won't. The main problem is that there are baffles towards the top of the tube and you won't be able to get out any carbon lodged behind them. The other problem is that the jet (the hole in the end) wears due to the end of pricker-rod enlarging it through use. If that happens, you will get over-fuelling resulting in a flare - which is exactly what you're getting. Assuming you're pre-heating sufficiently, then that's your likely cause. I think about 99.5% of Tilley running problems can be cured by changing the vapouriser. Try replacing it with a known good vapouriser and see if that makes any difference. Best of luck with it...
